Booktrusted.com
An initiative from Booktrust, an independent educational charity working for and with those concerned with what children read. This easy-to-use site provides advice for parents and rounds up information on children's books, children's book organisations, book prizes - including the Nestle Smarties Book Prize, awarded by Booktrust with the help of child judges - book events and specialist bookshops. See the excellent book lists, broken down by age group, and with categories for books on bullying, bereavement, and dyslexia.

Internet Public Library
The first public library of and for the Internet community, this friendly site has excellent reading-related links. Parents and younger kids can visit the Reading Zone section and there is a dedicated area for teenagers.

Reading is Fundamental, UK
A fantastic literacy charity with something for everyone.

Literacy Hour
Background on Literacy Hour, introduced into primary schools in England in September 1998 as part of the National Literacy Strategy, the first England-wide policy on the teaching of reading.

The National Literacy Trust held a conference in March 2002 where primary teachers were asked what the strengths and weaknesses of Literacy Hour have proved to be - see what they said.

Bookstart
An initiative by Booktrust based on the principle that it’s never too early to start introducing children to books.

Galaxy Kids
This interactive literacy programme from the Guardian’s Learn.co.uk site helps children learn to read - and makes the process fun. This is a subscription site (currently £19.99 per year) but you can take a free tour to see if it works for you and your child.

Bedtime Stories Online
This National Family & Parenting Institute initiative brings you a new bedtime story each week, free of charge – these can be printed out in colour or in black & white for your child to colour in.

Bedtime Reading Week, 11-17th March 2002
A delightful site providing booklists, suggestions for activities and events, as well as tips and advice about reading with children.

World Book Day, Thursday 14th March 2002
Every schoolchild from nursery age up to 18 will be entitled to a £1 book token via their school.

Reading Champions
A campaign to find public role models for reluctant male readers.

Lord of the Rings Gaming Workshops
A collaboration between public libraries and Games Workshop who are running Lord of the Rings workshops for 11-16 year olds to launch their new strategy game while recommending related fantasy/adventure reading material.
