>> MOBILE PHONE FEARS

Parents are ignoring health warnings by allowing young children to use mobile phones, according to a leading expert. In his latest report, Sir William Stewart, head of the National Radiological Protection Board, says there is still no proof that mobiles are harmful, but nonetheless he recommends a precautionary approach because of the difficulties of assessing the impact of such a rapidly evolving technology. He points out that childrens' skulls are not fully thickened and their nervous systems not properly developed - any radiation from a phone will penetrate further into their brains. Sir William also calls for a review of the planning process for base stations and argues that mobile phone masts should not be sited near schools, saying he is now more concerned about possible health hazards than he was five years ago. According to the latest figures, one in four children between the ages of seven and ten, now owns a mobile phone.

Parents can help reduce the risks by chosing phones with a low emission rate or SAR - go to the Mobile Manufacturers Forum website for information on individual phones.

Do you think children under 8 should be allowed to use mobile phones? Tell us what you think by voting in our Tigerpoll.

THE GOOD WEB GUIDE 2004

Overall rating: *****

‘This site has recently relaunched, providing a balanced source of information on all child issues and guiding parents to other authoritative resources. Set up by two mothers, Jocelyn James and Carolyn St Aubyn, the site offers a wealth of information, and this is an understatement, on a wide number of subjects for parents and children....The advice given is authoritative but unpatronising and unbiased.’

SUNDAY TIMES, 22 September 2002

‘Mothers’ pride: Sally Kinnes find tons of no-nonsense parenting advice at the brilliant www..

This site does for parents what Mrs Beeton once did for household management: it is a comprehensive online reference guide that offers reassurance for anxious parents, and insight for those who need to know more.

Two sections excel. Education is thorough enough to prepare you for an A-level in choosing a school, the workings of Ofsted or how government league tables are compiled. Health, meanwhile, is written by a female paediatrician whose online bedside manner is clear and calm. The entries tell you when they were last checked and updated, and the directory is so exhaustive that even anthrax gets a mention.

Of the other sections, which include message boards and links to news archives, the best are the dispatches from the front line. Jan Assheton, the mother of 12-year-old Noah, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, contributes a heartfelt diary – “It’s not that we don’t adore our son, it’s just that he is such hard work.”

Juliet Jones contributes another. One entry describes how she sat and wept when her first baby was six months old and she found out she was pregnant again: “Steve said that he didn’t want me to think of it as ruining his life, but rather to consider it as ruining both of our lives.” You have to like Steve. His is the kind of honesty that makes this site a class act.’

FAMILY CIRCLE, February 2002

‘Need parenting advice? New website www.tigerchild.co.uk is a great-looking, authoritative yet accessible site covering everything a parent needs to know – from health to education, to the latest family-related news, from birth to 15. Want the facts on the MMR jab? A comprehensive guide to schools in the UK? It’s all here – and far friendlier than wading through a whopping book!’

GOOD HEALTH, January 2002

‘Just what parents have been waiting for – anything to do with children up to the age of 15!

‘A smart looking site with black & white photos of children and a nice use of simple colours. The information given on this site is huge, and there are over 1000 links to other specialist sites! I checked the health section and there is a long list of A-Z of children’s ailments. Photographs of common rashes are shown, plus demonstrations of first aid techniques, and even recordings of different types of wheezing! The education section is absolutely indispensable.’

DAILY TELEGRAPH, 22 December 2001

'How to Buy the Best on the Net. This week: pet faves and hates.'

‘…an amazingly well-put-together, good-looking parenting site which tells you lots of useful stuff about everything from health to where to buy kiddie gear online.’

METRO LONDON, ‘Site Spotlight’, 12 October 2001

‘There’s so much badly researched child care advice on the Net that when you find a reliable and authoritative parenting website, it’s worth sticking with it…. Crucially, all the advice, which deals with a range of specific topics from the school system to the MMR vaccine, has been written by experts in their field and is thoroughly researched.’

DAILY TELEGRAPH, Weekend section, 15 September 2001

‘Tigerchild.com, an online antidote to internet agony…. one of the most professional parenting websites around.

‘This is a grown-up, almost academic site, illustrated by sepia photographs of children, with a particular strength in education and health. Education, in fact, is encyclopaedic… [There] are a zillion sites on the internet on every health topic imaginable, but the Tigerchild site has pre-selected the best. It thus offers one of the most intelligent and comprehensive paediatric resources anywhere.’
