This site does for parents what Mrs Beeton once did for household management: it is a comprehensive online reference guide that offers reassurance for anxious parents, and insight for those who need to know more.

Two sections excel. Education is thorough enough to prepare you for an A-level in choosing a school, the workings of Ofsted or how government league tables are compiled. Health, meanwhile, is written by a female paediatrician whose online bedside manner is clear and calm. The entries tell you when they were last checked and updated, and the directory is so exhaustive that even anthrax gets a mention.

Of the other sections, which include message boards and links to news archives, the best are the dispatches from the front line. Jan Assheton, the mother of 12-year-old Noah, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, contributes a heartfelt diary – “It’s not that we don’t adore our son, it’s just that he is such hard work.”

Juliet Jones contributes another. One entry describes how she sat and wept when her first baby was six months old and she found out she was pregnant again: “Steve said that he didn’t want me to think of it as ruining his life, but rather to consider it as ruining both of our lives.” You have to like Steve. His is the kind of honesty that makes this site a class act.’

I checked the health section and there is a long list of A-Z of children’s ailments. Photographs of common rashes are shown, plus demonstrations of first aid techniques, and even recordings of different types of wheezing! The education section is absolutely indispensable.’
